Wendell S. Edwards of Potecasi, NC departed this earthly life on Friday, August 11, 2017. He was the founder and former Director Choanoke Public Transportation Authority.
Choanoke Public Transportation Authority was the 1st Rural Transportation Authority in the State of North Carolina.
Mr. Edwards was a true pioneer for public transportation. Anyone that knew him valued his knowledge and wisdom. He provided visionary guidance, outstanding leadership, and committed his time in many ways throughout the communities that CPTA serves.
He was the first recipient of the “Governor’s Transportation Award” in 1988. This award is presented to a North Carolinian in recognition of service, leadership, innovation and achievement in the field of public transportation.
Mr. Edwards retired from CPTA in March 2007 and received one of the highest civilian honors in the State of North Carolina “The Order of the Long Leaf Pine”. This award pays tribute to state employees who have served North Carolina for 30 or more years.
On October 7, 2008 Mr. Edwards was inducted into the “Transportation Hall of Fame”. This award is given to people whom have made significant contributions to transportation in the State of North Carolina.
Mr. Edwards will truly be missed by his family at Choanoke Public Transportation Authority.
